Update from Anandaban Hospital Nepal
Anandaban Hospital has been a beacon of hope for people affected by leprosy in Nepal for nearly 70 years. Through your support, thousands of patients each year get the treatment and support they need to live free from leprosy.
But in a country that regularly faces wildfires, earthquakes, and the ever worsening impacts of climate change, the hospital is no stranger to disasters. And now, the team at Anandaban are facing the most challenging time in its history.
In late September, deadly monsoon rains hit the Kathmandu valley. The district surrounding the hospital sadly bore the brunt of the downpours. Roads turned to rivers and mud overnight. Over 200 people across the region were killed in the floods, with hundreds more injured and needing rescue.
The floods also caused catastrophic landslides at Anandaban. The team shared that the impact was worse than the devastating 2015 earthquake. You can see the scale of destruction below.
The team are working tirelessly to clear the debris. But the recovery and repairs will take time.
The landslide damaged the water and electricity supply. Thankfully, the hospital team have made temporary repairs so they can continue providing emergency care. But a sustainable solution is needed.
Sadly, several buildings on the hospital site were damaged too, including the leprosy ward. Patients were quickly evacuated to the main hospital building. But without enough space for everyone, doctors are making room for patients wherever they can find.
Your support and prayers are an incredible encouragement for the team and patients at Anandaban. Thank you for your continued kindness for people affected by leprosy in Nepal.
